Exhibitions and collections

Exhibitions and collections

AMSET’s permanent collection holds nearly 1,700 objects, from paintings, photographs and drawings to textiles, folk art, decorative arts and mixed-media works. It focuses on 19th- through 21st-century modern and contemporary North American and Mexican art, with particular attention to the region.

The John Gaston Fairey Collection of Mexican Folk Art contains more than 474 objects. The museum began acquiring works in 1950, and permanent displays include a Sculpture Garden with works by Jesús Moroles, George Tobolowsky, Carl Nash and David Strickland. Inside, the Felix “Fox” Harris gallery presents folk-art totems by the Beaumont self-taught artist.

Alongside the permanent displays, AMSET presents four to eight special exhibitions in its main galleries each year and features four to six local artists annually in its café. The changing program means the specific works on view vary; you can check the museum’s current exhibition information when planning.
